Hesburgh Sabbatical Program

A curriculum centered, community based, holistic sabbatical

The Hesburgh Sabbatical Program is a curriculum centered, community based, holistic sabbatical that fosters both personal and professional renewal and provides continuing formation for ministers in the Church.

In the course of the semester-long program, you will be part of a group of learners who participate in over 30 modules.  These are taught from a pastoral perspective by faculty members at CTU and elsewhere.  The modules range from three to six hours in length, and  are aimed at updating participants theologically, expanding ministerial horizons, developing a greater awareness of social justice issues, and deepening a person’s spirituality.

The sabbatical community is made up of experienced veterans of ministry who form a community of learners who assist one another in renewal.  Because it is an international community, it expands the horizons of participants and allows them to see the intercultural dynamics of ministry today.

The sabbatical program is based upon the four main components of continuing education:  human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral.  Weekly theological reflection helps to integrate all the components into the participant’s ministry.  Spiritual direction is available, as is participation in a fitness program through the University of Chicago. Participants are also encouraged to join in the many programs and activities at CTU.

Past Participant Comments:

"The four month Hesburgh sabbatical experience offered a variety of opportunities which met my needs in the 34th year of my priestly ministry.  The academic component was stimulating and reinforced my ministerial experience.  The life and ministerial experience of the other participants was a support while giving hope for the future of church.” Rev. Pete Wieneke, O.S.A., Australia

“The sabbatical time was intellectually stimulating, personally and culturally enriching all in the context of the beautiful city of Chicago! The Hesburgh program exposed me to a supportive, creative international faith community…There is great hope in such an experience!” Sr. Lucy Thorsen, N.D.S., Toronto, Canada

“I have found the Hesburgh Sabbatical program very life-giving! It is a good mix of time for leisure, fun activities, relaxation, prayer and reflection and input from high caliber professors! It is intellectually stimulating, spiritual, nourishing and affirming of one’s faith and being a member of the universe community.” Sr Emi Frances Oh, D.O.L.C., Fiji, South Pacific
