Chicago Artists Interpret American Literature - Fall 2017

Chicago Artists Interpret American Literature is a travelling group show of more than 40 noted Chicago artists interpreting in a personal way works of American authors. The artists represented in this exhibit were selected with an eye of the quality of their work and to demonstrate the rich diversity of styles in Chicago Art.

This latest exhibition unites visual images with novels, stories, poems, plays, essays and song lyrics by noted American authors. The art is not meant to be literal illustration but personal visual variations on characters, situations, themes and ideas from both classic works and contemporary authors. It includes paintings, prints, photographs, sculpture, costumes and mixed- media pieces.

One advantage to art based on literature is the strong human connection, intimately in touch with the lives of people, that reveals the depth and range of the American experience. It is intended as voyage of discovery on many levels, of past, present, and perhaps implies something of what our future might be.
